New Delhi: Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh recently accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of giving in to US President Donald Trump regarding the India-US trade deal. He believes that Modi’s desperation compromised India’s sovereignty.
Ramesh’s comments came after Congress announced a nationwide campaign against this trade deal. He pointed out that the US Supreme Court had just invalidated Trump’s tariffs, which led to Trump’s statement that he values Modi as a “great friend,” and that the trade deal will move forward as planned.
He claimed that Trump had previously halted a key operation by threatening to increase tariffs on Indian exports. Ramesh shared a timeline of the trade negotiations, indicating that Trump was the first to announce the deal back on February 2, citing friendship and respect for Modi.
Ramesh raised questions about Modi’s urgency to announce the deal. He asked why the Prime Minister felt it necessary to seek Trump’s help at a particular moment, suggesting that waiting could have saved Indian farmers from distress and preserved the nation’s interests.
Echoing these concerns, Randeep Singh Surjewala pointed out that, following the Supreme Court’s ruling on February 20, the legal basis for Trump’s tariffs was stripped away. He questioned why the Modi government rushed to finalize the trade deal when they knew the court’s decision was pending.
Surjewala highlighted the implications of the Supreme Court’s ruling for the trade deal. He asked whether the Modi government would consider annulling the deal now that the tariffs could not be enforced.
This pushback from Congress is part of a broader strategy. Recently, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi met with party leaders from various states to discuss the trade deal and plan Kisan Sammelans, starting in Bhopal.
