The number "86" has various meanings in slang, including "to reject" or "to kill," according to Merriam-Webster. Some Republican figures, like Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, interpreted Comey’s post as a call for violence against President Donald Trump, who is the 47th U.S. president. Comey, however, stated that he opposes violence.

In response to the situation, Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said they take any potential threat seriously. "We vigorously investigate anything that can be taken as a potential threat against our protectees," he noted.

After deleting the post, Comey said he didn’t realize the numbers could be linked to violence. "It never occurred to me, but I oppose violence of any kind," he added.
