Tariq Hameed Karra, the Congress chief in Jammu and Kashmir, and PDP legislator Waheed Ur Rehman Para recently shared their worries about climate change and environmental damage in the region. Their discussion took place in the J&K Assembly, where both leaders spoke about the government’s push for new infrastructure and tourism projects.
Karra emphasized that climate change is a real threat. He urged the Chief Minister to prioritize sustainability. He pointed to examples from Kerala and Maharashtra, where tourism thrives without harming nature. “Jammu and Kashmir should welcome all forms of religious tourism, but only if it’s environmentally friendly,” he said. He reminded everyone of the devastating floods and changing weather patterns, citing Uttarakhand’s recent natural disasters as a warning for J&K.
As a specific example, Karra mentioned Dal Lake in Srinagar and Mata Vaishno Devi in Katra, both of which are recognized as World Heritage Sites. He believes these places can attract visitors while remaining committed to environmental care.
In the same session, Wahid Ur Rehman Para raised concerns after Health Minister Sakeena Itoo shared plans for new townships in J&K. She mentioned 1,298 Kanals of land would be used for this project, with more land being sought for housing solutions across the region. Para questioned the vague definition of who would benefit from these developments, expressing concern that wetlands like Rakhe Gund are at risk. “Our climate crisis is already affecting us in many ways,” he said.
Para pointed out that over the past few years, extensive land and resource extraction has harmed the environment and caused serious issues like a declining water table. He warned that without addressing these environmental matters, any new building projects could lead to future problems. His call for immediate action shows a deep concern for the balance between development and ecological preservation in Jammu and Kashmir.
