A San Antonio food distributor is making a big move: Labatt Food Service is investing $42 million in a new facility in Central Texas. This project will boost the local economy by adding 150 permanent jobs and expanding Labatt’s presence in the area.
The new facility will span 150,000 square feet on 48 acres near Interstate 35 and Ronald Reagan Boulevard. Recently, Williamson County officials approved a 10-year agreement that offers Labatt a 30% property tax reduction.
Commissioner Valerie Covey expressed excitement about welcoming Labatt to the county. “This project will diversify and enhance our commercial and industrial employment base,” she noted.
Labatt has until July 31, 2027, to get a certificate of occupancy for its new buildings. This certificate confirms that the building is safe for use.
Being the 10th largest food distributor in the U.S., Labatt serves restaurants, schools, and military bases across five states and has a workforce of over 1,900 people. Their annual sales are more than $1.8 billion.
County Judge Steve Snell praised Labatt as a partner that aligns with the community’s values. He believes their presence will make a positive impact in the rapidly growing area of Jarrell.
The Jarrell City Council also supported Labatt by approving a 10-year, 50% property tax abatement, capped at $600,000. In addition, the Jarrell Economic Development Corporation agreed to provide $500,000 for a new water line.
Mayor Patrick Sherek highlighted the importance of local jobs, stating, “Most people have to drive to Georgetown, Round Rock, Austin, or Belton for jobs.” With Labatt’s investment, residents will have more employment opportunities right in their town.
Interestingly, according to recent studies by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, local job growth has been a key factor in community development. Areas that attract large employers tend to see a rise in local living standards, as more job options can lead to economic stability and growth.
In today’s economy, the presence of large companies like Labatt can significantly alter local dynamics. As communities continue to grow, the need for accessible jobs becomes critical. Labatt’s commitment to this expansion can indeed transform Jarrell into a more vibrant economic hub.
