Jersey’s Inaugural Climate Council Kicks Off Comprehensive Review for a Greener Future

Jersey’s first independent Climate Council is now reviewing the Island’s climate efforts. This is an important step for Jersey as it seeks transparency and accountability in its environmental policies.

The Climate Council’s review will focus on how well the Government of Jersey is following its Carbon Neutral Roadmap. This plan aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions according to the Paris Agreement. The Council will make recommendations to ensure Jersey stays on course.

This Council was born from an amendment to the Carbon Neutral Roadmap in 2022, pushed by the Environment, Housing, and Infrastructure Scrutiny Panel, with Deputy Steve Luce as Vice Chair. The amendment called for an independent body to oversee and advise on climate actions.

In 2023, the States Assembly unanimously supported the Council’s formation. They will produce reports every four years, with the first phase covering 2022 to 2025.

Deputy Luce expressed his support for the Council, saying, “This is essential for transparent oversight of our climate commitments. We’ve appointed a diverse Council with members from various professional backgrounds, including local residents.”

Deputy Hilary Jeune, Chair of the Scrutiny Panel, also emphasized the importance of this initiative: “We need to ensure that Jersey effectively tackles greenhouse gas emissions. The Climate Council will assess progress and suggest the best actions for the government.”

Philip New, the Council’s Chair, highlighted the collaborative effort required: “This rapid review draws upon expertise in utilities, climate science, finance, and sustainable energy. We are committed to addressing the complex issues of climate change with integrity.”

Recent statistics show that climate change is not just a future problem—it’s now. A survey by the Climate Change Committee found that 75% of people in the UK believe climate change is a serious issue. This reflects a growing concern that is echoed in Jersey.

Rising temperatures, extreme weather events, and shifting ecosystems are just some immediate consequences of inaction. Thus, the Climate Council’s role is crucial, impacting how Jersey prepares for its future amid these pressing challenges.
