The company plans to use this break to update the facility, while the bottling and warehouse operations, along with the James B. Beam Distilling Co. visitor center and restaurant, will remain open.

The larger distillery in Boston, Kentucky, will keep running. In a statement, Jim Beam noted they regularly review production levels to align with consumer needs and are in discussions with the distillery union about potential layoffs or changes.

The bourbon industry is unique because it requires years of aging. For instance, Jim Beam’s flagship bourbon must mature for a minimum of four years. Industry experts explain that makers must make strategic bets about future demand, a challenging task given current market conditions.

Recent trends show that American spirits exports dropped by 9% in the second quarter of 2025. Exports to Canada, in particular, fell dramatically by 85%, largely influenced by ongoing tariff negotiations. Amidst all this, bourbon production in Kentucky has actually increased — there are now about 16 million barrels aging in warehouses, more than three times the number from 15 years ago.
