Grand Forks, N.D. – The University of Jamestown women’s tennis team rallied back to win 4-3 against the University of Mary at Choice Health and Fitness. This victory improved their overall record to 4-5 and evened their Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) record at 4-4, while the University of Mary fell to 4-9 overall and 2-5 in conference play.
The match began with the University of Mary taking the lead by securing the doubles point. They won two out of three matches, starting with the duo of Josie and Anna Sueflohn defeating Laia Vallespi and Sydney Friesen 6-3. The decisive match was at No. 3 doubles where Elizabeth Lekse and Brooke Mulholland triumphed over Anna and Mariia Sharandachenko with a score of 6-4.
With a 1-0 deficit, Jamestown dominated the singles matches. Anna Sharandachenko quickly won 6-1, 6-1 against Anna Sueflohn at No. 4 singles. At No. 2, Bodil van Zeijl edged out Elizabeth Lekse with a score of 6-3, 6-4. Julie van Zeijl followed up at No. 1, defeating Natalia Jorge Mazaro 6-3, 6-2, and Mariia Sharandachenko capped off the sweep at No. 3 with a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Josie Sueflohn.
The Marauders managed to snag wins at the final two singles. Maja Panganiban bested Laia Vallespi 7-5, 6-1 at No. 5. The most intense match of the day occurred at No. 6 where Brooke Mulholland battled through three sets, ultimately winning 6-0, 2-6, 7-6 (8-6) against Sydney Friesen.
Beyond the match, this event highlights the increasing competitiveness of women’s tennis in collegiate sports. According to recent data from the NCAA, women’s tennis participation has been steadily rising, showcasing a growing interest and investment in women’s athletics across the country.
