NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Johns Hopkins faced off against Wesleyan, ranked fifth, and unfortunately lost 5-2 on Thursday. With this defeat, the Blue Jays’ season record now stands at 7-6 after encountering their seventh ranked opponent. The Cardinals improved to 6-1.
The match started on a high note for Hopkins, who took the lead 1-0 after securing two doubles victories. Sophia Kim and Sahana Sanjeev triumphed in their match against Lucinda Gatsiounis and Olivia Chalik at number three. Following that, Jay Xiao and Lia Melvin clinched the doubles point by defeating Jackie Soloveychik and Natalia Leroy at number two. However, Lane Durkin and Sarah Youngberg managed to take a tight victory (7-6) over Sydney Langer and Sahana Madala at number one, preventing a clean sweep for Hopkins.
Wesleyan quickly turned things around by winning five out of six singles matches. Soloveychik evened the score with a decisive 6-2, 6-2 win over Xiao at number one. Madala briefly put Hopkins back in the lead with a solid 7-5, 6-3 win against Chalik at number six, but that was short-lived. Gatsiounis crushed Sanjeev 6-0, 6-0 at number five to tie the match again.
Then Youngberg put Wesleyan ahead for the first time by beating Langer 7-6, 6-1 at number three. Durkin sealed Wesleyan’s win with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 victory over Kim at number two, followed by Leroy defeating Melvin 7-6, 1-6, 7-5 at number four.
Looking ahead, Johns Hopkins will take on 30th-ranked NYU on Friday, March 21.
