The Hoover school system is excited to host its 11th annual Girls Engaged in Math and Science (GEMS) Expo this Saturday, February 1, at Spain Park High School. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
This year, the expo is expected to welcome 650 elementary and middle school girls, a significant increase from just 65 participants in its first year. The theme for this year’s event is “Dream Big,” aimed at sparking interest in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) among young women. Currently, women represent only 34% of the workforce in STEM fields, highlighting the importance of such initiatives.
One of the highlights of the day will be a speech by Gitanjali Rao, an 18-year-old inventor and MIT student. Rao is passionate about inspiring the next generation of girls to pursue careers in STEM and will share her personal journey.
The expo will feature a variety of hands-on activities and learning opportunities. Girls will have the chance to explore careers in fields like cardiology, veterinary medicine, meteorology, engineering, and space exploration. They will also meet inspiring female role models working in these areas.
Geri Evans, a STEM teacher at Bluff Park Elementary, said, “We want students to remember GEMS as the moment that sparked their passion for STEM.”
The event is made possible through the generous support of sponsors like Signature Homes, U.S. Steel, and The Hoover Foundation.
