Join Fortuna Sunrise Rotary and Community Members in a Heartfelt Fundraiser for Food for People!

Food for People recently received over $20,000 for its Backpacks for Kids program, primarily from a Seafood Boil fundraiser organized by the Fortuna Sunrise Rotary Club. Club representative Chris Broadstock shared that the Rotary Club itself donated $7,000, with the rest coming from generous attendees.

The Fortuna Sunrise Rotary Club has played a crucial role in launching the Backpacks for Kids program in Humboldt County. Each year, funding this program is a top priority for them. They help provide meals to local children who may not have enough food at home, ensuring they have enough to last through the weekend.

Rick Center, another club member, emphasized the impact of this initiative. “Many kids in our community face food insecurity. Sending them home with meals helps them come back to school ready to learn,” he explained.

David Reed, the Development Director at Food for People, echoed this sentiment. He attended the Seafood Boil and found the community’s generosity “incredible.” Reed noted that while need remains high in Humboldt County, they have managed to reduce the waiting list for children needing assistance this year. Support like this is vital for making those changes possible.

This generosity highlights a larger trend in community support. According to recent data from the USDA, nearly 13.6% of households with children experienced food insecurity at some point in 2022. Local efforts like this one show that communities are stepping up to address these challenges and ensure that children can thrive.

The success of the fundraiser reflects a strong community spirit. It encourages other organizations and individuals to contribute, aiming for a future where no child goes hungry.
