For over 68 years, the Union Gospel Mission Twin Cities has been making sure that thousands of families enjoy Thanksgiving without hunger. This year, they plan to distribute 10,000 meals as the need in the community reaches new heights.
The Thanksgiving Grocery Bag Distribution takes place on Monday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at their Men’s Campus in St. Paul. On Thanksgiving Day, a hearty meal will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Pam Stegora Axberg, CEO of the Union Gospel Mission Twin Cities, noted a sharp increase in community food needs, especially after the recent pause in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. “It’s especially difficult during the holidays,” she said. “I look forward to seeing our community come together to support those in need.”
During the grocery bag event, 250 volunteers will help pack and distribute meals, including 2,000 frozen turkeys and 14,000 pounds of potatoes. This initiative is about more than just food; it’s about giving people a sense of belonging during the holiday season.
Axberg emphasized that the Thanksgiving Day celebration offers guests more than a meal; it creates an uplifting dining experience that reminds everyone that they matter.
Local food drives are also ramping up. The Linwood Recreation Center is collecting donations for the Hallie Q. Brown Food Shelf until Monday, with items like canned goods, pasta, and hygiene products being especially needed. The city of St. Paul is continuing its food drive, focusing on shelf-stable and unopened items.
With the demand for food assistance rising, recent statistics show that food insecurity affects one in ten households in Minnesota. This increase highlights the importance of community support, especially during the holidays. Organizations like Neighborhood House are also encouraging smaller donations during their market hours. They have two locations for drop-offs, making it convenient for anyone willing to help.
