Help Stamp Out Hunger in Hawaiʻi
On Saturday, May 10, letter carriers in Hawaiʻi will be on a special mission: collecting non-perishable food donations for the 33rd annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. This event, organized by the National Association of Letter Carriers, is the largest one-day food collection in the United States.
Last year, Hawaiʻi residents donated over 879,000 pounds of food. That’s a huge help to local food banks and pantries, especially during times when supplies are running low.
If you want to contribute, simply place your non-perishable food items in a bag next to your mailbox before your mail arrives on May 10. Your letter carrier will take care of the rest. As Tiffany Kahihikolo from the Kahului Post Office mentioned, late donations are still welcome. Just leave them out, and they’ll be picked up.
Since its start, the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive has collected an incredible 1.9 billion pounds of food across the nation, including donations from places like Puerto Rico and Guam.
The Need for Support
In Hawaiʻi, the need is critical. The Maui Food Bank reports that one in four children is at risk of going hungry, which is a staggering 62% increase in the past decade. This drive is especially vital during the summer months when kids often lose access to school meal programs.
