Sundance Film Festival Highlights

PARK CITY, Utah (AP) — The Sundance Film Festival is buzzing with comedy this year. Saturday’s premieres featured “The Gallerist,” a hilarious take on the art world starring Natalie Portman. Another standout was Olivia Wilde’s new film, “The Invite,” which tackles the complexities of a crumbling marriage.

“The Invite” got a warm reception at the Eccles Theater, receiving a standing ovation. This marks Wilde’s third venture as a director, following her previous film, “Don’t Worry Darling.”

In this new movie, Wilde and Seth Rogen play a couple whose dinner with their neighbors, played by Penélope Cruz and Edward Norton, turns from awkward small talk into a brutally honest and sometimes funny encounter. Wilde shared that many memorable scenes were enhanced by improv. “We shot in order, which was incredible,” she noted, hinting that there might even be enough footage for a seven-hour cut!

Wilde has been busy at Sundance. Just the night before, she helped premiere Gregg Araki’s film “I Want Your Sex,” where she portrays an eccentric artist.

Following “The Invite,” was “The Gallerist,” where Portman plays Polina Polinski, an ambitious gallerist trying to make her mark at Art Basel in Miami. With an intriguing twist, she gets involved in a scheme to sell a dead body. The film features a notable cast, including Jenna Ortega, Zach Galifianakis, and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

In another highlight, “Wicker” premiered, showcasing Olivia Colman as a sardonic fisherwoman who has a basket weaver make her a husband, played by Alexander Skarsgård.

The festival serves as a crucial platform for these films to find distribution. With its diverse range of stories, Sundance continues to be an important destination for filmmakers and audiences alike.
