There are two food drives happening in West Seattle this weekend. If you can lend a hand, here’s how you can participate:
Food Drive at Lafayette Elementary
The Lafayette Elementary PTA is organizing a community food drive called “Fill the Truck” on Saturday, November 15th, from 9 AM to noon. They’ll be collecting canned and non-perishable food items to support the West Seattle Food Bank.
This initiative addresses the growing need for food assistance, especially during tough times like the recent government shutdown and the holiday season. A van from the West Seattle Food Bank will be parked outside Lafayette Elementary (2645 California Ave SW) to gather donations from the community. Everyone’s contributions, including those from students over the two weeks leading up to the drive, will go directly to the food bank.
For the latest list of what the food bank needs, check their website.
Alki UCC Food Drive
On Sunday from 11 AM to 3 PM, Alki UCC will hold its monthly food donation drive. This month, they are focusing on stocking the pantry for “The Welcome Table,” a meal program run by the Westside Interfaith Network.
Items that are especially needed include peanut butter, canned meats, soups, vegetables, and low-sugar cereals. They are also requesting pet food in marked bags and grocery store gift cards. Donations can be dropped off at Alki UCC’s front-porch barrel anytime, but especially during this drive.
Alki UCC is located at 6115 SW Hinds.
Community Impact
The need for food assistance continues to rise. Recent statistics show that 1 in 8 Americans experience food insecurity. Events like these food drives play a crucial role in supporting underserved communities. As many families face economic struggles, the spirit of giving in local communities becomes more important than ever.
Your contributions can make a difference this holiday season. Whether it’s a few cans of food or a box of pasta, every bit helps those in need.
