Oklahoma State University (OSU) celebrated its 151st commencement on December 12-13 at Gallagher-Iba Arena. This event marked the second graduation ceremony led by President Jim Hess, who took office earlier this year.
The keynote speaker, Chancellor Sean Burrage, has had an impressive career. He served as the president of Southeastern Oklahoma State University and even held two terms in the Oklahoma Senate. Burrage motivated the graduates to embody the values of OSU, known as the Cowboy Code. He emphasized that this code isn’t just about wearing orange but about the character and integrity graduates bring to their future.
“Being a Cowboy is about who you are,” Burrage said, urging graduates to dream big and show resilience in their endeavors.
This year was particularly special for the Spurlock family. For over a decade, Tony Spurlock has opened OSU commencements with the sound of bagpipes. His daughter, Gracie, graduated with plans to attend law school. “OSU has always been a big part of our family,” she shared, highlighting her upbringing surrounded by school spirit.
Many graduates echoed the importance of community that OSU fosters. Andrea Avelar and Angelica Mojica, both graduating in communication sciences and disorders, noted that the support from peers and faculty significantly shaped their college experience. “OSU feels like a family,” Avelar said, showcasing the university’s welcoming atmosphere.
The weekend featured multiple ceremonies across various colleges, highlighting the diverse paths students take. OSU has evolved from its beginnings as Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College in 1890, graduating its first six students in 1896. Now, it has transformed into a multi-campus system, serving over 5,000 students yearly.
This year’s commencement further strengthened OSU’s proud tradition, uniting graduates, families, and alumni. Each graduate now carries the mission of the Cowboy Code, ready to make their mark in the world.
