Each year on April 19, India celebrates Satellite Technology Day, marking a pivotal moment in its space journey. This date honors the launch of Aryabhata, India’s first home-built satellite, which took off on April 19, 1975. The satellite is named after Aryabhata, a renowned mathematician from the 5th century.

Organized by ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation), this year’s event involves a collaboration with India Space Lab and the G20 India Presidency as part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav initiative. • Studying plasma phenomena in the Earth’s ionosphere.

Although Aryabhata suffered a power failure just five days after launch, its primary systems remained operational until March 1981. It continued to orbit Earth until re-entering the atmosphere on February 10, 1992. With this launch, India became the 11th country to send a satellite into space.
