Join the Celebration: Taste of Soul Marks 20 Years of Food, Music, and Community on Crenshaw!

The Taste of Soul Family Festival is back on October 18, celebrating its 20th year! Held on Crenshaw Boulevard, this festival is one of California’s largest free street events and a cherished cultural tradition in South Los Angeles.

Started by Danny J. Bakewell Sr., publisher of the L.A. Sentinel, the festival highlights Black-owned businesses, food vendors, art, and community resources. Over the years, millions have enjoyed this vibrant celebration along the historic Crenshaw corridor.

This year, expect three lively music stages, including the Brenda Marsh-Mitchell Gospel Stage, which features talented artists like Karen Clark Sheard and Jason McGee & The Choir. The festival runs from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Food is a major attraction, with over 300 vendors participating. Some returning favorites include:

• Hotville Chicken
• Uncle Artie’s Chicken Wings
• Smashin’ It Burgers
• Pucker Up, with over 100 lemonade flavors
• Grandma’s Butter Bunches

The festival also offers free shuttle services from various points in the area, making it easy for everyone to attend. LA County will have booths on-site with information about employment opportunities and social services.

Interestingly, events like Taste of Soul are part of a growing trend. Recent research shows that community festivals can boost local economies and foster social connections. The National Endowment for the Arts reports that neighborhoods with active cultural events see increased community engagement and pride.
