The New Ulm Area wrestling team is ready to shine. After a strong start to the 2024-25 season, the Eagles are finally hosting their first home competition this Thursday at New Ulm High School.
This upcoming event is a triangular meet featuring the Eagles, Blue Earth Area, and Tri-City United. Currently ranked eighth in Class AA, the Eagles are eager to show their skills to local fans.
Coach Briggs emphasized the importance of home events for building community support. He noted, “It’s easier for families to attend home matches. We want everyone to see the Eagles in action this year.”
Thursday’s meet is special. Not only is it a chance for fans to see the wrestlers, but it will also highlight mental health awareness. The Rolling Thunder Wrestling youth team will perform, and the pep band will add to the excitement. The event kicks off at 5 p.m.
The Eagles have built their success on a strong foundation from last season, where they finished as runners-up in the Big South Conference and sent four wrestlers to state. Despite losing some key seniors, they have maintained their momentum this year.
This season, the Eagles have celebrated significant achievements. They finished second at the Big South Conference Tournament, with several wrestlers placing in the top three. Regan Johnson, Wyatt Pollard, Anna Pollard, and Ellie Dake became individual champions in their weight classes.
The team’s current record stands at 13-1. They also performed impressively at other tournaments, taking second at the Glencoe Invitational and earning first at the Foley Invitational.
After Thursday’s event, the Eagles will have another home match on January 28, facing tough opponents including the Big South champions, the Marshall Tigers. That meet will also celebrate Senior Night for three graduating players: Wyatt Pollard, Frederickson, and Henry Waloch.
For those who haven’t yet experienced a wrestling match, now is a great time to jump in. Coach Briggs is looking forward to welcoming new fans and hopes for a packed gym during what promises to be an exciting season.
Looking ahead, the future of Eagles wrestling is bright. Their ninth-grade wrestling team has qualified for the NGL state tournament, set for January 18.
