As we approach World Environment Day on June 5, the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) is gearing up for an exciting event. They’re teaming up with Dangote Industries and Nigerian Breweries to launch an essay competition for undergraduate students in Lagos. This initiative aims to engage young minds in the crucial issue of environmental preservation.
Dr. Tunde Ajayi, the General Manager of LASEPA, shared details about the competition during a recent press conference in Ikeja. He emphasized that this is more than just a contest. It’s a way to raise awareness among students about pressing environmental issues, like desertification and climate change. With this year’s theme, “Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience,” participants will write essays that explore these challenges and offer innovative solutions.
The competition is open to all undergraduate students in Lagos, with an enticing prize pool. The winner will receive N500,000, while the second and third places will earn N300,000 and N200,000, respectively. Beyond cash, participants could also win the chance to become LASEPA’s ambassador for environmental protection or gain access to valuable resources for their studies.
This initiative highlights a broader trend where youth engagement in environmental issues is becoming increasingly vital. Recent research indicates that young people are more concerned about climate change than ever. A survey from the Pew Research Center found that 71% of young adults view climate change as a major threat. Engaging students in discussions about environmental policies can not only empower them but also inspire meaningful change.
For those interested in participating, details are available through LASEPA’s social media and at their email, info@lasepa.gov.ng. The deadline for essay submissions is June 5, with evaluations handled by a panel of qualified judges.
As our planet faces more environmental challenges, initiatives like this are essential. They encourage the younger generation to think critically about sustainability and contribute ideas that could lead to long-lasting changes. The involvement of local industries like Dangote and Nigerian Breweries also shows a commitment to corporate responsibility, aligning business interests with environmental stewardship. Together, these efforts can help shape a healthier, greener future.
