Get ready for the 2025 Goesan Red Flavor Festival! This exciting event will take place from May 23 to 25 in Goesan County, North Chungcheong, known for its abundant chili pepper production.
One of the main attractions is the “Spicy Food Fighter” contest, where contestants will compete to see who can eat spicy food the fastest. On May 25, 50 participants will battle it out in two rounds. The first round will split the contestants into five groups of ten. Each person will eat five Cheongyang chili peppers. Only the quickest whistlers will move on to the finals!
In the finals, participants will face a spicy challenge with chicken feet that increase in heat level from 1 to 5. Each stage will see eliminations, making it a true test of endurance. Prizes include Goesan Love Gift Certificates, with the top winner taking home 300,000 won (about $210).
Last year, the festival introduced a thrilling final round where contestants rushed to eat spicy fish cakes. One participant, Jo, recalled, “After the peppers, I drank two bottles of water! I was too full for the finals.” It’s clear that strategy plays a big role in this contest!
The Red Flavor Festival, which started last year, aims to cater to all ages, unlike the fall kimchi festival that attracts an older crowd. Last year, it drew over 172,000 visitors. Local officials noted that the festival includes vibrant spring flower displays and a variety of entertainment.
This year’s festival will feature even more spectacular events, like a drone light show with 1,500 drones and a musical fountain. Fun competitions, such as dance and cheerleading contests themed around the color red, will also take place. Visitors can participate in activities like chili pepper planting and a “Red Flavor Sports Day” along scenic flower trails. There’s even a retro concert to celebrate spicy flavors!
Visitors dressed in red can snag discounts at food trucks and local restaurants. Bringing a festival brochure may earn you a 10% discount at participating eateries, too.
Goesan County Mayor Song In-hern emphasized the festival’s role in boosting the local economy. “This event celebrates our culture and products, creating joyful memories for everyone,” he said.
As we gear up for the festival, one thing’s clear: it’s all about fun, flavor, and engagement. Whether you’re there to compete or enjoy the festivities, Goesan has something for everyone!
