A Kiwi cyclist and an Australian adventurer are gearing up for an incredible journey across New Zealand to raise money for climate-resilient classrooms in Vanuatu. Laurence Mote and Huw Kingston are set to ski, cycle, hike, and sail over 4,000 kilometers over 90 days in their mission, called ‘Alpine Odyssey Aotearoa.’
Starting on June 25, they will kick off their expedition at the northern tip of the North Island, finishing at the southern tip, where they’ll visit all 24 ski fields along the way. Many of these areas are struggling with the effects of climate change.
Laurence Mote, who is legally blind and recovering from a severe brain injury caused by a bee sting back in 2013, understands the challenges ahead. Nevertheless, both adventurers are fully committed to this cause.
Vanuatu has faced ongoing challenges since a major earthquake with a magnitude of 7.3 struck Port Vila, the capital, only three months ago. This natural disaster claimed the lives of 14 people and affected around 80,000 residents. The earthquake left neighborhoods devastated and even damaged key infrastructures, including a new presidential palace built by the Chinese government.
The classrooms funded by this journey will be designed to withstand climate emergencies, ensuring that children can continue their education despite challenges. “Alpine Odyssey Aotearoa isn’t just about exploring beautiful landscapes; it’s a call to action to protect our Pacific neighbors who are already feeling the harsh impacts of climate change,” stated Huw Kingston. The classrooms will be constructed using sustainable materials to maximize natural light and utilize renewable energy.
Kingston has a history of undertaking challenging fundraising adventures. In 2022, he trekked 700 kilometers through the Australian Alps, raising over NZ$75,000 for educational programs.
In addition, Heather Campbell, the CEO of Save the Children New Zealand, expressed pride in partnering with Kingston and Mote. She emphasized the vulnerability of children during climate crises, highlighting that every dollar raised can help build resilient communities that secure their futures.
This expedition is a great way for the duo to raise awareness and funds for a pressing cause. As they journey through the stunning landscapes of New Zealand, they hope to inspire others to support those affected by climate change in the Pacific Islands.
