Large events often shine a light on human trafficking. But it’s crucial to turn that spotlight into lasting action that protects vulnerable individuals throughout the year. McCoy, who has almost 20 years of experience in child safety and anti-trafficking, emphasizes this need for consistent efforts beyond the event itself.
One significant initiative is “No Room for Trafficking” (NRFT), launched in 2019 by the lodging industry. This collaborative program includes companies, law enforcement, and NGOs, all working together with shared goals to combat trafficking. The initiative trains employees to recognize and report trafficking, with over 2.5 million training sessions completed since 2020. These resources are accessible for free in 34 different languages.
Kevin Carey, CEO of the AHLA Foundation, notes that the NRFT initiative aligns with the foundation’s daily mission of investing in workforce training and community support against human trafficking. “We aim to raise awareness, educate, and provide aid to survivors,” he explains.
McCoy suggests three key actions that policymakers can implement to strengthen anti-trafficking efforts during large gatherings:
- Consistent Training: Ensure all sectors receive regular anti-trafficking training to avoid gaps in prevention.
- Streamlined Reporting: Create easy reporting processes that utilize law enforcement and survivor advocacy resources.
- Long-term Investment: Direct government and community resources towards emergency housing and specialized law enforcement units.
With these strategies, the lodging industry can effectively collaborate with various organizations, including the Congressional Task Force and local law enforcement, to keep the focus on community safety.
As major events approach, McCoy urges unity among law enforcement, survivor advocacy groups, and policymakers. “We must protect the vulnerable and set an example of U.S. leadership in fighting human trafficking globally,” he states.
On July 30, aligned with the United Nations World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, the AHLA Foundation hosted its annual NRFT Summit, announcing grants from the Survivor Fund to aid organizations working with survivors.

According to a recent study from the International Labor Organization, around 40.3 million people are victims of modern slavery, with 71% of them being women and girls. This alarming statistic underscores the urgency of ongoing anti-trafficking efforts.
In public discourse, hashtags and social media campaigns tied to events often trend, highlighting collective awareness of issues like trafficking. These platforms can amplify calls for accountability and support, catalyzing community action against this global crisis.
By focusing on education, collaboration, and sustainable solutions, society can work toward long-term change in the fight against human trafficking.
