Nearly 300 health leaders and clinicians came together in Decatur for the second annual State of Metro Atlanta Health (SMAH) conference, organized by the Atlanta Regional Collaborative for Health Improvement (ARCHI). Jeff Smythe, ARCHI’s executive director, noted the challenges faced over the past year, including significant budget cuts to public health funding. He highlighted the need for unity: “No single institution can carry the weight alone. If we move together, better health for every community in metro Atlanta is possible.”
During the event, leaders like Emory Healthcare CEO Dr. Joon S. Lee spoke on the importance of resource-sharing. John Haupert, CEO of Grady Health System, emphasized the need to connect residents with essential services. Mark Crossen from Northside Hospital reminded attendees to prioritize the core mission of healthcare: serving patients and communities.
The keynote speaker, Renée Branch Canady from the Michigan Public Health Institute, encouraged participants to see diversity as an opportunity rather than a challenge. She stated, “We can’t be fearful of difference; we have to see it as an opportunity.”
Topics discussed included a panel featuring Georgia State Representative Saira Draper on health policy, innovative solutions to food insecurity, and a new $9 million initiative linking housing with healthcare for unhoused individuals.
Given the recent trends in public health funding, the sentiment at the conference aligns with a broader national conversation. A recent survey indicated that 74% of health professionals believe improving collaboration among organizations will be crucial in overcoming current challenges.
