Join the Movement: Nearly 1,000 Passionate Michiganders Unite at MI Healthy Climate Conference

Recently, nearly 1,000 individuals gathered in Detroit for the **2025 MI Healthy Climate Conference**. The event, organized by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), focused on the theme “Road to 2030.” Attendees came from across Michigan and 19 other states, representing over 400 organizations, including government, nonprofits, and businesses.

“Seeing so many dedicated individuals in one place fills me with hope for Michigan’s future,” said Cory Connolly, Michigan’s chief climate officer. “To create change, we need everyone on board.”

The conference featured insights from leaders in various fields, including clean industry, agriculture, and renewable energy. Two prominent speakers were Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Lt. Governor Garlin Gilchrist II, who highlighted key state initiatives aimed at boosting Michigan’s clean energy transition.

MI Healthy Climate Challenge

Lt. Governor Gilchrist introduced the **MI Healthy Climate Challenge**. This program aims to accelerate Michigan’s shift to clean energy by offering substantial grants. These funds will help reduce emissions and create jobs while supporting the state’s growing clean energy sector. The first competition, **Solar for Savings**, is now open. It aims to provide solar energy solutions for low-income households, enhancing energy efficiency across the state.

Michigan Home Energy Rebates

During the conference, Governor Whitmer also announced the roll-out of the **Michigan Home Energy Rebates (MiHER)** program. This initiative allows residents to receive up to $34,000 in rebates for energy-efficient home improvements. The state secured $210 million from the federal Inflation Reduction Act for this program, which focuses on energy efficiency upgrades and electrifying homes.

The Way Forward

The conference emphasized the **MI Healthy Climate Plan (MHCP)**, which aims for 100% carbon neutrality by 2050. This plan looks to spark economic growth, lower energy costs, and enhance public health while protecting natural resources. Participants discussed progress on MHCP goals and shared success stories and challenges, fostering collaboration across various sectors.

According to recent data, states prioritizing clean energy can see significant job growth. A report from the U.S. Energy Information Administration indicates that renewable energy jobs have increased by 23% since 2020, showcasing the potential benefits of such initiatives.
