Join the Movement: PM Calls for Nationwide Participation in Earth Hour to Champion Climate Responsibility

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is urging all Pakistanis to take part in Earth Hour. This global event will happen on March 28, from 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM. For one hour, people are encouraged to turn off unnecessary lights as a statement of environmental support.

In his message, the Prime Minister stressed that Earth Hour is more than just switching off lights—it’s a time for reflection and commitment to protect our planet. This year’s theme, “Give an Hour for Earth,” highlights the importance of environmental awareness and responsible energy use.

Climate change is a pressing issue, and even though Pakistan contributes less than 1% to global greenhouse gas emissions, it faces severe risks. Extreme weather events—like floods and droughts—threaten food security and everyday life. This makes it clear that climate action is vital.

To counter these challenges, the government is focusing on a climate-resilient development agenda. Key initiatives include better water management, advancing renewable energy, and promoting green technologies. The Upscaling Green Pakistan Programme and the Living Indus Initiative are among the major projects aimed at enhancing ecological balance.

Recent data from climate studies indicates that Pakistan is among the countries most vulnerable to climate change. According to the Global Climate Risk Index, it ranks among the top nations affected by extreme weather events. This statistic underscores the importance of individual and collective action in fighting climate change.

The Prime Minister calls on citizens to support Earth Hour, not just as a one-off event but as a habit to adopt year-round. Collective efforts today can lead to a healthier planet for future generations.
