Lucknow’s Sarojininagar MLA, Rajeshwar Singh, recently urged a united front against the climate crisis at a seminar held by Lok Adhikar Manch at National PG College. He emphasized the urgent need for proactive measures, highlighting that the world is at a critical tipping point with global temperatures rising by 1.5°C. This increase poses threats not just to ecosystems but potentially leads to the extinction of millions of species.
Singh pointed out the grave air quality situation in Lucknow, where residents experience hazardous air quality levels for over 300 days each year. He called for a citywide movement to protect the environment.
During the seminar, Singh praised India’s commitment to achieving Net Zero emissions and Uttar Pradesh’s ambitious goal of planting over 200 crore trees. In Sarojininagar, he has started several initiatives, such as creating 150 Tarashakti Kendras and distributing 30,000 eco-bags. His “Environment Warriors” campaign has not only recognized the efforts of forest personnel but has also encouraged the involvement of over 1,000 students.
Adding a tech twist to environmental action, Singh announced an AI crash course at the Ran Bahadur Singh Digital Education and Youth Empowerment Centres and donated computers to the college. He stressed that Lucknow, known for its educational heritage, should lead in climate solutions. His vision includes establishing a carbon credit market, promoting solar energy, and reducing food waste.
Recent studies show that cities like Lucknow can greatly benefit from increased green spaces. A report highlighted that urban trees can lower temperatures and improve air quality. Engaging local students in environmental campaigns has been shown to instill a sense of responsibility and future stewardship for the planet.
In today’s world, social media is a powerful tool for advocacy. Posts showcasing environmental initiatives have garnered significant attention, reflecting a growing trend toward eco-conscious living among the youth. As Singh noted, “Now is the time to act.”
By fostering this collective spirit, Singh aims to inspire not just Lucknow but cities worldwide to take meaningful action against climate change.
