Join the Movement: Sepa Boosts Awareness on Ditching Plastic Bags Across Sindh

The Sindh government is stepping up efforts to enforce a ban on plastic shopping bags starting June 15. This initiative, led by the Sindh Environmental Protection Agency (Sepa), aims to tackle environmental issues caused by plastic waste.

Sepa teams have been busy checking markets and production facilities in several cities, including Hyderabad and Sukkur. They have been distributing information about the ban to vendors and manufacturers to ensure everyone is aware of the new rules.

In Mirpurkhas, Sepa has already taken action against plastic recycling units, asking them to present their cases before the agency’s director general. Meanwhile, in Sukkur, business leaders expressed their support for the ban during a meeting with local officials. They emphasized that the focus should first be on manufacturing units in Karachi, known as a major plastic production center.

Secretary for Environment Agha Shah Nawaz Khan emphasized the dangers of plastic bags. He stated, “These bags not only harm our environment but also pose risks to human health. We are committed to raising awareness and enforcing strict measures. There will be no compromise on this issue.”

Health experts echo his sentiment. Research shows that plastic pollution can lead to various health problems, including respiratory issues and contamination of food sources. According to a 2022 report by the World Health Organization, millions of people worldwide face health risks linked to plastic waste in their environment.

Dost Muhammad Rahimoon, an advisor to the Chief Minister on Environment, has urged all community members to support this initiative, calling it a patriotic duty. The message is clear: everyone must play a role in reducing plastic pollution for a healthier future.

As cities around the world grapple with plastic waste, the Sindh government’s actions set an example. They aim to create a cleaner, greener environment, emphasizing collaboration among all stakeholders.
