Every two years, we face a fresh set of issues in our state. Some are easy to tackle, while others are complicated. This year, our biggest challenge is our public education system.
Right now, not all students have equal access to education. Many families are feeling the pinch from rising property taxes, and schools are dealing with fewer students. Teachers are facing hurdles in a world shaped by COVID-19. I’ve been talking with teachers, students, and school leaders from all over Vermont. They share stories of creativity, determination, but also stress and worry. Teachers tell me their resources are stretched too thin. Students want richer learning experiences. Administrators seek long-term solutions for their schools.
One thing stands out: People across Vermont want stability and fairness in education.
There are many opinions on how to move forward, but we can’t look at education in parts. A strong public education system is key to a healthy democracy and economy. We should stay true to our values and avoid ideas like statewide voucher systems or more school choice options, which could widen the gap in education. To truly support all Vermont kids, we need to work together, have real discussions, and find common ground.
We all need to make sure that every child—regardless of where they live—has access to quality public education. We must create a funding system that is affordable and meets the needs of our communities. It’s essential to listen to each other and work together to solve these issues.
There aren’t any quick fixes. The laws we create will take time to roll out. History shows that we can accomplish tough tasks when we unite. As lawmakers, we carry this responsibility on behalf of Vermonters. This session, we are ready to focus on collaboration and determination to address the challenges ahead.
Every decision we make affects the lives of Vermont residents and the future of our education system. It’s crucial that every child has the chance at a quality education, complete with arts, sports, and career programs. Our teachers need the tools to help their students, and families should feel confident that their children are in safe, thriving schools. This foundation supports healthy communities across all 14 counties.
We will listen, have difficult conversations, and strive to find consensus. Together, I believe we can create laws that ensure high-quality education for every student in Vermont—an education we can all afford.
