Thousands of people from various organizations and schools will gather at Parliament tomorrow, July 9, to push the UK government to address climate change and biodiversity issues. Among those participating are Church groups like CAFOD, Jesuit Missions, and others from The Climate Coalition.
This family-friendly event will feature a prayer vigil outside Parliament, emphasizing the importance of caring for people, nature, and the climate. Attendees are encouraged to speak with their Members of Parliament (MPs) about essential funding to support communities facing the effects of climate change, tackling global debt, and creating a greener future for everyone.
Participants will remind MPs that this is a crucial moment for leadership, urging them to protect our health, environment, and communities.
As part of a special initiative, the Columban Justice, Peace and Ecology Team, along with the London FCJ Centre for Spirituality and Ecojustice, is sending representatives from schools in Birmingham and Liverpool to the lobby. Schools like Bishop Ullathorne and Cardinal Newman in Coventry, Archbishop Illsley and St Thomas Aquinas in Birmingham, St Peters in Solihull, and Bellerive in Liverpool will have sixth form delegates at the event.
They will visit Queen Elizabeth Hall in Westminster, where they’ll connect with others committed to the climate cause. Activities led by CAFOD at Westminster Cathedral Hall will further enrich their experience.
Bishop John Arnold, a leading voice for environmental issues in England and Wales, will also attend, celebrating Mass at 5:30 PM in Westminster Cathedral.
Recent studies show that climate action is becoming more urgent. According to a report by the IPCC, we have less than a decade to make significant changes to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. Many young people are rallying around this cause, expressing their passion on social media with hashtags like #ActNowChangeForever.
Gatherings like this remind us that collective action can lead to meaningful change. By coming together, these organizations and participants are making a statement: we must act now to secure a sustainable future for all.
