Join Us for a Fun-Filled Harvest Fest at North Valley Food Bank This Saturday!

This Saturday, the North Valley Food Bank is hosting its annual Harvest Fest in Whitefish. It’s a fun, free event for families, and everyone is invited to come out and pick apples. The apple-picking runs from 10 a.m. to noon, and after that, there will be a celebration until 2 p.m.

Volunteers can meet at the food bank located at 251 Flathead Ave. There, they’ll be assigned a tree where they can gather fresh fruit. These apples will be turned into applesauce, enough to last the food bank for nearly a year!

Maddie Culhane, the community outreach and partnership coordinator, explained the goal of the event. “We want to keep both people and bears safe,” she said. “By picking the apples, we can reduce human-bear interactions and help feed the community.”

The celebration will include face-painting, crafts, and cider pressing. Plus, attendees can learn more about food access and resources in the area. FAST Blackfeet and Fish, Wildlife and Parks will host interactive educational booths. During the event, any damaged apples will be sent to a bear sanctuary.

Interestingly, community events like this reflect a growing trend in local food movements. According to a recent survey by the American Community Gardening Association, nearly 35% of Americans now participate in community gardening or food-sharing programs. These initiatives not only prevent food waste but also promote environmental awareness and community bonding.
