This April, Clark’s School of Climate, Environment, and Society (CES) is marking a special milestone with a campuswide celebration for Earth Month. Various departments, offices, and student groups will host activities that focus on pressing climate and environmental issues.
Events will include hands-on opportunities like working in the Hadwen Arboretum and the Clark Community Garden. There will also be creative projects where sustainability meets art, such as decorating everyday items. Plus, attendees can learn from scholars and students who have conducted climate research globally. The month will culminate with the annual Green on the Green celebration for Earth Day.
One highlight will be the inaugural School of Climate, Environment, and Society Forum. Moderated by New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman, this event will feature Mindy Lubber, president of the sustainability nonprofit Ceres, and Lou Leonard, the D.J.A. Spencer Dean of CES. They will discuss the current state of climate progress and explore solutions to significant challenges. They will also emphasize the role of universities in fostering environmental change and preparing future leaders for complex global issues.
Experts in the field say that engaging students in climate action is vital. According to a report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, involving youth in sustainability efforts can create a sense of ownership and responsibility, crucial for long-term solutions. Surveys indicate that over 70% of millennials and Gen Z prioritize sustainability in their education and future careers.
