Join Us for Flip-Flop Golf: A Fun Fundraiser Supporting Mental Health – KVRR Local News

In Fargo, North Dakota, a local non-profit called “Enough With the Stigma” celebrated Mental Health Awareness Month with a mini-golf event at Thunder Road. Founded by Ron and Karla Forde two and a half years ago after their son Connor took his own life, the organization aims to foster open discussions about mental health.

Connor was known for his bright spirit and love for golf—always sporting flip-flops while playing. To honor him, the Fordes handed out flip-flops to mini-golf players during the event, a fun twist that encouraged community engagement.

“We don’t want mental health to be heavy. We want it to be enjoyable,” Karla shared. “It’s all about connecting with friends and having a good time.” The proceeds from the mini-golf game will support local mental health initiatives.

Such events are crucial. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), one in five adults in the U.S. experiences mental illness each year. Initiatives like “Enough With the Stigma” aim to reduce the stigma surrounding these issues, making it easier for individuals to seek help and support.

Historical context shows us that mental health awareness has evolved. In the past, topics like depression and anxiety were often considered taboo. Today, organizations are working hard to change this narrative, demonstrating that mental health is just as important as physical health. The rise of social media has also played a role, with platforms being used for awareness campaigns. Recent surveys indicate that about 70% of people are more willing to discuss mental health openly compared to a decade ago.

These changes highlight the importance of creating safe spaces for conversation, providing support, and encouraging community involvement. With events like this, we can all play a part in normalizing mental health discussions.
