CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Beloved Early Education and Care Collective (BEE) recently held a symposium focused on Black Maternal Mortality. This event brought together experts, resources, and community members to foster discussion and learning.
The BEE Collective is dedicated to supporting pregnant women and families with young children. They aim to create a strong community where these families can share experiences and learn essential healthy practices. Organizer Crystal Davis noted that the event was a result of extensive collaboration among many professionals, including doctors and doulas.
One key takeaway from the symposium came from Alicia Page of the South Carolina Commission for Minority Affairs. She presented data revealing that while overall maternal mortality rates have decreased, rates among Black mothers have risen. This highlights a pressing need for community support and informed discussions.
Davis wants attendees to feel empowered. She emphasized the importance of trusting one’s own body and knowing where to find reliable resources. “We aim to talk about advocacy and support for Black moms and babies,” she said, pointing out the vital role of birth workers and lactation specialists in this journey.
The BEE Collective also hosts regular healing circles for postpartum mothers and summer classes like water walking for expectant mothers. These activities encourage community bonding and shared reflection on their unique journeys.
Supportive networks are crucial for new mothers. Davis stressed that while everyone is eager to meet the baby, it’s essential to prioritize the mother’s needs. Simple acts like providing meals or connecting mothers with lactation consultants can significantly ease the transition into motherhood.
Beyond maternal concerns, the BEE Collective advocates for early childhood education. Stephanie McFadden described their advocacy efforts, focusing on issues such as implicit bias, teacher pay, and supporting children facing suspensions.
Looking ahead, they’re planning a trip to the state capital on April 3 to speak with lawmakers about protecting children and families. The team encourages parents and community members to join them in this important conversation.
