Join Us for the SDSU Extension Food is Medicine Webinar: Unlock the Power of Nutrition for Your Health!

BROOKINGS, S.D. – South Dakota State University Extension is hosting a free webinar called “Food is Medicine” on January 22, 2026. This event aims to explore how healthy eating can prevent and manage chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease.

Led by Gemma Bastian, an assistant professor and SDSU Extension Nutrition and Health Specialist, along with graduate student Olivia Husmann, the webinar will focus on the science behind the Food is Medicine concept and related health initiatives.

“We want to bring together people who care about health and nutrition—healthcare providers, farmers, retailers, and public health professionals,” Bastian shared.

The 60-minute session starts at noon CST. To participate, registration is required to get the Zoom link. You can register at extension.sdstate.edu/events by searching for “food.”

Bastian has noticed a growing interest in the Food is Medicine approach among nutrition leaders across South Dakota. However, familiarity is still limited, partly due to the state’s vast geography. The webinar aims to bridge this gap by helping participants understand important terminologies and build networks.

In the past three years, Bastian has met many South Dakotans passionate about nutrition and its benefits. “This webinar will create a space for a Food is Medicine movement that fits South Dakota’s unique needs. Our goal is to encourage everyone to eat well and thrive,” she said.

This initiative is part of a larger partnership with the South Dakota Healthy Nutrition Collaborative. It also supports efforts from other programs, like Double Up Dakota Bucks and the CDC’s High Obesity Program.

In a recent survey conducted by the CDC, around 60% of Americans reported wanting to improve their nutrition. Engaging public health experts and local communities can enhance understanding and create a supportive environment for healthy eating.
