Join Us in the Fight Against Summer Hunger: The Return of the Help Us Can Hunger Food Drive!

The Soup Kitchen Community Centre and St. Vincent Place are teaming up for the second annual Help Us Can Hunger food drive, sponsored by SooToday. From June 2-8, they’re collecting nonperishable food items to support local families in need.

Summer often sees a drop in donations, yet the need for food assistance remains high. Currently, the shelves at the Soup Kitchen and St. Vincent Place are looking quite bare. This drive is crucial to restock before the summer months.

You can drop off your donations at various local businesses, including:

• Country Style
• Lyon’s Timber Mart (Black Road and Wellington Street)
• Northern Credit Union
• OC Beauty
• Sault Ste. Marie Public Library (both branches)
• Steel City MMA
• YNCU Bay Street
• YNCU Trunk Road

This year, several churches have joined the effort as well. Participating churches include Bethany Baptist, Bethel Bible Chapel, Emmanuel United, and others. Their support adds additional locations for donation.

On June 5 and 6, volunteers will be collecting food items directly at participating grocery stores like Food Basics, Metro, and Rome’s Your Independent Grocery. St. Mary’s College will also collect donations on June 5.

Food insecurity is a pressing issue. In Canada, about 1 in 8 households struggles to put food on the table, according to a 2022 report from the Canada Food Banks. Community efforts like this food drive are vital in addressing these challenges.
