Join Us This Saturday for the Annual Food Drive by Letter Carriers: Make a Difference in Your Community!

The National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) is hosting its annual food drive on Saturday, May 10. This event, started in 1993, plays a crucial role in providing meals for millions of Americans.

Residents can easily participate by leaving non-perishable food items next to their mailboxes. Letter carriers will pick up these donations while delivering mail and then distribute them to the Second Harvest Food Bank and its partners in Clark, Champaign, and Logan counties.

Toni Tayloe-Haddix, the Procurement Manager, shared her excitement: “We’re happy to be part of this food drive. It unites the community and helps us meet the growing demand for food during the summer when kids are out of school.”

On that Saturday, about 200,000 letter carriers nationwide will collect donations. People are encouraged to leave bags with foods like canned soups, vegetables, meats, pasta, rice, or cereal near their mailboxes before their mail arrives. All collected food stays local, directly benefiting neighbors in need.

Last year, the drive gathered over 10,000 pounds of food, providing nearly 9,000 meals. Additionally, the NALC Branch 45 presented a $2,000 check to the food bank, highlighting their commitment to community welfare. Branch President Brian DeWell emphasized, “Stamp Out Hunger isn’t just about collecting food; it’s about ensuring no one goes hungry in our community.”

If your letter carrier misses your donation, you can drop it off at the SHFB warehouse at 31 N. Sycamore St. on Saturday between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. or during regular hours from Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
