Join Us This Saturday for the Annual Letter Carriers Food Drive: Help Fight Hunger in Our Community!

The annual Letter Carriers Food Drive is approaching, offering a fantastic chance to help “Stamp Out Hunger” in your community. Participating is simple. You’ll find a blue bag in your mailbox the week before the event. Fill it with non-perishable goods and place it by your mailbox on Saturday, May 10. Your letter carrier will collect the donations and deliver them to Food for People and local food pantries.

According to a recent press release from Food for People, support is crucial this year. There’s been a significant rise in families and seniors needing food assistance, especially with living costs on the rise. Despite the organization’s efforts to adapt, they’re facing cuts to food supplies and programs, which could mean less help for vulnerable groups such as children, seniors, and disabled individuals. Community action is more important than ever to ensure everyone has access to essential food resources.

What items are most needed? Canned fish, meats, nut butters, soups, stews, and canned fruits and vegetables are all great options. Please avoid donating home-canned items or food in glass containers, as these can’t be accepted.

If you can’t catch your letter carrier on Saturday, don’t worry! You can drop off your donations at Food for People located at 307 W. 14th St. in Eureka, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Alternatively, reach out to your local food pantry for other drop-off options.

Community involvement in food drives like this one has grown immensely in recent years. For instance, in 2021, food banks reported a 50% increase in demand compared to pre-pandemic levels. These drives not only help provide immediate relief but also foster a sense of community and connection among residents.

So, let’s come together to support those in need. Your contribution can make a real difference.
