UToledo Health, along with Life Connection of Ohio and Solvita, is celebrating National Donate Life Month with a special flag-raising ceremony. This event takes place on Thursday, April 2, at 11 a.m. outside the University of Toledo Medical Center. Everyone is welcome to join.
April is dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of organ, eye, and tissue donations. It’s a time to honor those who have made life-saving contributions through their gifts.
Kandy Takas, who received a kidney transplant at UTMC in 2000, will raise the flag this year. Kandy expressed her gratitude, saying, “I’m so thankful for the gift of life. It allowed me to go back and be a mom and be here to watch my son grow up.” Her story highlights the profound impact of organ donation on individuals and families.
According to recent statistics from Life Connection of Ohio, a single registered donor can save up to eight lives and help heal as many as 125 others through tissue donation. Each year, over 40,000 individuals receive life-saving organs, and tissue transplants benefit more than 2 million people. However, the need for donors is still vast, with more than 100,000 people on the waiting list for transplants in the U.S. This number continues to grow, emphasizing the critical need for more registered donors.
Kristin Calkins, the director of trauma services at UTMC, pointed out, “Becoming a registered donor is a way to save lives. A strong donor base can significantly lower the wait times for those in need.”
National Donate Life Month serves as a reminder for all of us to consider becoming organ donors. It encourages conversations about the importance of donations, which can lead to life-changing outcomes for many.
