Tinubu mentioned that climate goals must turn into actionable plans, driven by investments and solid policies. “Commitments must lead to action,” he stated, reflecting on Nigeria’s approach to reducing emissions.
The importance of youth involvement was also front and center. Tinubu encouraged young Nigerians to dive into green entrepreneurship and innovative technologies. “Climate resilience is national security,” he remarked, calling for decisive leadership.
Experts at the event raised alarms about ecological challenges Nigeria faces—like flooding and desertification. Halima Bawa, from the Ministry of Environment, pointed out that these issues are impacting food security and rural livelihoods, especially for farmers.
Lawal praised the Climate Change Act of 2021. He believes it lays a strong legal foundation for managing climate impacts and planning long-term emission reductions as Nigeria aims for net-zero by 2060.
Yussuf Kelani, the President’s Special Assistant on Climate Change, framed the tour as a call to action. Its focus is on improving access to climate finance, creating green jobs, and synchronizing climate policies from federal to state levels.
Professor Babajide Alo, a guest speaker, urged Nigerians to adopt eco-friendly lifestyles. He emphasized the need to rethink priorities and reduce carbon footprints to secure a sustainable future.
Julius Berger’s Chief Risk Officer, Shakira Mustapha, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to sustainability. She emphasized the vital role the private sector plays in advancing climate solutions, notably through infrastructure that supports renewable energy and responsible construction.
