Instead of focusing on protecting our health and natural resources, many lawmakers seem intent on rolling back important protections. This approach happens at a time when our state grapples with the harsh realities of climate change.
Just last week, severe flooding claimed 21 lives in Kentucky. This tragedy highlights the urgent need to take environmental issues seriously. Unfortunately, some lawmakers are failing to acknowledge the problem. Many Kentuckians may not see immediate changes in temperature, leading to skepticism about climate change. However, experts at the University of Kentucky note that the signs are clear: we’ve seen increased rainfall and soil saturation. Many farmers are struggling as heavy rains lead to declining crop yields, and they need support to adapt to these changes.
While researchers are working hard to develop flood-resistant crops, what are our elected officials doing? Instead of taking action, some lawmakers are denying the reality of climate change. Kentucky’s attorney general, Russell Coleman, is among those opposing progress. He has joined other Republicans in efforts that weaken electric vehicle support and relax clean water and air quality regulations.
Here are some specific actions being taken by the legislature that could hurt our environment:
- Blocking the use of citizen-collected air quality samples for clean air enforcement.
- Rolling back regulations that protect our streams and groundwater, which many communities rely on for drinking water and fishing.
The denial of climate change extends to Kentucky’s State Auditor, Allison Ball, who discourages state pension investments in renewable energy. She claims these actions are political statements rather than beneficial for residents. However, one has to wonder if the families affected by the recent flooding would agree with her viewpoint.
It’s time for Kentucky to take a serious look at the impacts of climate change and prioritize our community’s health and safety. Addressing these challenges is essential for a sustainable future.
