PARIS — A trial has begun for 10 people accused of a violent robbery involving Kim Kardashian. Back in 2016, while in Paris for fashion week, she was held at gunpoint, and $9 million worth of jewelry was stolen.

On the first day of court, jurors were selected to hear witness testimonies. Kardashian was staying at a private apartment when five of the accused arrived, armed on bicycles and on foot, gaining entry to the building. They allegedly robbed her during the terrifying incident.

The suspects, dubbed “the grandpa robbers” by local media, include some who are in their 60s and 70s. This case has faced delays, leading to one defendant’s death and another being too ill to stand trial alongside the others.

Key figures in the case include Aomar Ait Khedache, 69, thought to be the mastermind, and other alleged gang members. Among them is 78-year-old Christiane Glotin, who supposedly helped plan the heist. Some defendants have admitted to their roles, including Yunice Abbas, 72, who even penned a book titled “I Kidnapped Kim Kardashian.” He claims he was recruited months in advance and didn’t know the robbery’s target until after it was done.

Abbas’ lawyer recently shared that his client wants to explain himself and express regret. He understands the seriousness of the situation.

In France, defendants do not formally plead but can admit or deny guilt during the trial, which is overseen by a jury in serious cases where the sentence may exceed 20 years. Cameras are not allowed, so proceedings are recorded through notes and sketches.

Kardashian is expected to testify on May 13. She has previously described the robbery as profoundly terrifying, recalling her panic in trying to call emergency services in a foreign country. “I was sure I was going to die,” she said during a 2017 episode of “Keeping Up With the Kardashians.”

The incident has sparked widespread conversation about celebrity security and the risks that come with fame. According to a recent survey by Statista, 27% of celebrities report feeling unsafe in their everyday lives, a stark reminder of the dangers they face.
