Georgios Bakoyannis is an experienced leader. He was the mayor of Athens from 2019 to 2023 and the governor of Central Greece from 2014 to 2019. Since 2020, he has been part of the European Committee of the Regions. Recently, he was elected president of the ENVE committee, where he will tackle important issues like climate change, biodiversity, pollution reduction, waste and water management, and energy policies.
The ENVE committee is one of six groups within the European Committee of the Regions. It includes 90 local and regional leaders from all EU member states. These leaders work together to prepare opinions and projects that influence environmental policies. The next ENVE meeting is in Brussels on March 5.
After his election, Bakoyannis shared his vision for the future. He emphasized the need to connect environmental goals with economic growth and community well-being. He believes the current challenges we face can open doors to building more sustainable and resilient cities. He highlighted that local and regional authorities should play a crucial role in shaping Europe’s future.
