Kumaraswamy: Karnataka Leads India with 50% of Machine Tool Production

Karnataka is a powerhouse for machine tools, contributing about 50% of India’s production. Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy emphasized this at the opening of IMTEX 2025, a major trade show for machine tools in Bengaluru.

Kumaraswamy stated that this industry plays a vital role in India’s economy, helping to create jobs and support the manufacturing sector.

M.B. Patil, the Minister for Large and Medium Industries, noted that the Indian machine tool industry has made significant strides, especially in metal cutting technology, which is crucial to manufacturing.

Karnataka leads the nation, accounting for 52% of machine tool production and ranking as the third-largest player in heavy engineering. Major companies like ABB and Siemens operate here, contributing to this thriving scene.

Metal cutting involves shaping metal parts using special tools on machines like lathes or mills. This process is essential for achieving precise shapes and sizes, as it removes material from the workpiece.

Prashanth Doreswamy, CEO of Continental Automotive (India), highlighted that the auto industry is a significant consumer, using around 55% of the machine tools produced in India.

India is ranked ninth in machine tool production globally and sixth in consumption. According to a recent report, production has seen an estimated annual growth of 10%, reaching ₹13,571 crore.

IMTEX 2025 will run for a week, featuring over 1,100 exhibitors from 23 countries, showcasing innovations and connecting industry leaders at the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre. The event wraps up on January 29.
