Lagos Empowers Youths to Drive Climate Innovations for a Sustainable Future

The Lagos State Government is stepping up its efforts to involve young people in climate innovation and environmental sustainability. Recently, they held an event called “Youth Engagement on Climate Education and Green Innovation” at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Dr. Tajudeen Gaji, the Permanent Secretary in the Office of Environmental Services, emphasized the importance of youth involvement. He believes that while the government can create policies, real change comes from the creativity and energy of young people. The theme of the event was “Empowering Youths for Innovative Climate Solutions and A Greater Future.” It aimed to connect young people with meaningful environmental actions.

Youth are seen as the thinkers and creators of today. They have the potential to shape a better future for Lagos and beyond. Dr. Gaji pointed out that transforming waste into resources through upcycling and recycling is one of the many innovative ideas young minds can bring to life. The challenges of climate change are urgent and require immediate action; each person has a role to play.

Esther Olaleye, the Deputy Director of the Environmental Education Unit, reiterated the government’s commitment to environmental education. She noted that the energy and creativity of the youth are essential in addressing today’s environmental challenges. The program aims to showcase youth-led projects that contribute to sustainability.

Omolara Brown, also from the Environmental Education Unit, explained that the initiative is a platform for young innovators to share their ideas and achievements. A highlight of the event was the recognition of twenty outstanding youth-led projects, with prizes awarded to the top contenders.

Today, more young people are emerging as climate champions. A recent survey found that 80% of young people feel a duty to protect the environment. Their ideas and actions can significantly impact the fight against climate change.

Ultimately, the youth are not just participants in this movement; they are leaders. As we push for a cleaner and greener Lagos, the voices of young people will be crucial in creating a sustainable future.
