Bay Area Faces Growing Food Insecurity as SNAP Benefits Freeze
In the Bay Area, food insecurity is becoming a pressing issue. Recently, Lieutenant Governor Elena Kounalakis met with nonprofit leaders, emphasizing the urgent need for a collective response. She visited White Pony Express, a Concord-based organization that redistributes surplus food to those in need. Every year, they help around 130,000 people, but this number is expected to soar due to the halt in SNAP (CalFresh) payments for low-income families.
Eve Birge, CEO of White Pony Express, pointed out that we’ve been in a food crisis that has worsened since COVID-19 began. Many local nonprofits are gearing up for a significant increase in demand. These organizations rely heavily on donations from major retailers like Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods to stock food pantries and shelters across Contra Costa County.
To tackle this challenge, the Governor’s Office has boosted the CalFood program to $80 million. Additionally, several counties are looking into emergency funding to assist residents affected by the SNAP freeze. Kounalakis urged the public to contribute through food or monetary donations.
A local business owner, Oz Rojas of OG Tacos, is already stepping up. He and his wife are offering free meals to anyone who shows proof of SNAP benefits. Rojas stated, “It’s super important as a community to come together in times like this.”
White Pony Express has also launched a month-long food drive to support the rising demand. They are specifically looking for donations of canned meats, nut butters, beans, shelf-stable milk, and soups.
