Lincoln Students Shine in Their Debut on University Challenge: A Must-Watch Showdown!

A university student recently shared his excitement about being selected for University Challenge. This long-running quiz show will feature a team from the University of Lincoln competing against Lancaster University. The episode is set to air on BBC Two at 8:30 PM BST.

The team is led by Sam Orman-Chan, a 22-year-old computer science student. Alongside him are John Clayworth (history), Laura Bruce (conservation of cultural heritage), and Grace Bloomfield (chemistry). Sam expressed his surprise, stating, “I was quite surprised… we just never expected anything to come of it.”

For Sam and his team, competing against prestigious universities like those in the Russell Group and Oxford or Cambridge was daunting. “You just don’t expect a provincial university to get on it,” he said. This is Lincoln’s debut appearance on the show.

The team secured their spot after a rigorous audition in Birmingham, where they battled another team in a challenging quiz. Sam noted, “The quiz is really quite tricky.” They also spent time bonding with the show’s producers to show their team dynamics.

To prepare, the team practiced with weekly pub quizzes at their university bar. Sam pointed out their unique strengths: “We all have different specialties. We’re evenly split between humanities and sciences, so we cover a lot of ground.”

The community has rallied behind them, creating a sense of support and excitement. Sam noted, “We’ve had a pretty good response… everyone’s been behind us. It’s been amazing.” He admitted the experience is intimidating, but he feels a bit more at ease knowing his dad appeared on The Chase nearly a decade ago.

As they finalize preparations, this team from Lincoln not only represents their university but also a wider community eager to see them shine on national television. Their story highlights how passion and teamwork can lead to unexpected opportunities.
