Lita Ford is backstage at K.K. Downing’s club in Birmingham, feeling a whirlwind of emotions. Tonight, she’s set to perform “Close My Eyes Forever,” her iconic duet with Ozzy Osbourne. The song, released in 1989, holds a special place in rock history as Osbourne’s only Top 10 hit.
“It’s going to be really emotional,” she says, reflecting on their time together. Memories rush back as she looks at the stage set in Ozzy’s honor. “How did we end up here? This is Birmingham, where everything started.”
The creation of “Close My Eyes Forever” carries its own story. Back in 1987, Lita was reshaping her identity after leaving The Runaways, and Ozzy was battling his own demons. One memorable night at Record One Studios in Los Angeles, Lita and Ozzy locked themselves in a small room with a keyboard and ended up creating something magical by morning.
“Sometimes you just need to let go to be creative,” she explains. “That night, we were a little high, I will admit. But it all came together.”
She shares insights about Ozzy from that era. “He’s always been well-dressed and charismatic, a true rock star,” she says, recalling moments from Easter dinner at her home. Ozzy showed up in a limo, and the neighbors were shocked. While there, he hilariously attempted to carve a leg of lamb but ended up beneath the table instead. “He was pure entertainment,” she chuckles.
As Ford prepares for her performance tonight, she anticipates the emotional reaction from the audience when they hear the song. “It’s something many people play at funerals. It resonates deeply.”
Recent statistics show that the impact of rock music on mental health is significant, with many fans finding solace in the lyrics, especially songs like hers. In a survey by the Music Industry Research Association, 70% of respondents noted that rock music played a crucial role in coping with loss.
Lita believes that Ozzy has influenced countless lives through his music. “Great rock stars never truly die. Their music lives on.” As she gets ready to rock, her spirit embodies the legacy of Ozzy and the timeless nature of their collaboration.
