Nicole Gregerson, a dedicated educator from the Mancos School District, has been selected to join Colorado Education Commissioner Susana Córdova’s teacher cabinet. She will attend her first meeting in February.
Gregerson, who has worked in the Mancos district for 19 years, currently teaches kindergarten. Throughout her career, she has also taught first and third grades, as well as a multiage kindergarten/first grade class.
The teacher cabinet aims to gather insights from educators across Colorado. Gregerson sees this as an opportunity to represent rural schools, which often face unique challenges like limited resources and difficulties in attracting qualified staff. She believes that highlighting the needs of these schools can lead to better funding and policies that support their specific requirements.
“Rural schools can do amazing things with the resources they have,” Gregerson shared. “I want to shine a light on our dedicated teachers and the achievements of our students.”
Gregerson was encouraged to apply after Córdova visited Mancos last spring. Superintendent Todd Cordrey noted that Córdova was impressed with the quality of teaching in the district and believed someone from Mancos should represent rural education on the cabinet.
She will serve a two-year term on the cabinet, which aims to ensure that all areas of Colorado are represented. Gregerson is committed to bringing attention to the specific needs of schools in Southwest Colorado. “I’m honored to be part of this cabinet and excited to advocate for our community,” she said.
As she embarks on this new journey, Gregerson’s experience and passion for education will surely make her a valuable voice for rural schools. The next cabinet meetings are scheduled for February 28 and May 2 in Denver.
