Local Organizations Prepare for CAPK Funding Cuts: Effects on Community Food Security

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Local nonprofits in Kern County are experiencing serious funding cuts from CAPK. This is having a big impact on food distribution for families in need.

NaTesha Johnson, founder of Upside Academy Inc., shared that her organization used to help over 20 families each month. Now, due to funding shortages, she can only assist 1 to 3 families. “We just can’t keep up with the costs,” she said. Many families are now left wondering where their next meal will come from.

Blaine Hodge, program manager at CAPK, revealed alarming statistics: funding from Cal Foods has dropped by 85%, and USDA resources are down 40%. This means there will be less food available at their facility, which is vital for local nonprofits. Hodge walked through the dwindling aisles, explaining that their stock is set to disappear. “In August and September, all the resources here will be gone,” he remarked. This loss translates to 800 pallets of food and several canceled deliveries.

The situation is critical. According to Kern County Public Health, 117,000 residents are now uncertain about their next meal. Essential items like milk, rice, and beans are among those set to become scarce. With these staples disappearing, families struggling with food insecurity will feel the pain even more.

Community support is needed now more than ever. Johnson emphasizes, “We really need everyone to come together to support local nonprofits. Every bit helps.”
