LSU’s athletic director, Scott Woodward, is leaving his position immediately, as announced on Thursday. This decision follows a tense period, particularly after the governor of Louisiana made it clear that Woodward would not have a say in hiring the next football coach.
Verge Ausberry, the Executive Deputy AD, will take over as the interim athletic director. The Board’s Chair, Scott Ballard, thanked Woodward for his six years of service, highlighting the successes he achieved during his tenure.
Woodward’s departure came just after the dismissal of football coach Brian Kelly, which resulted from disagreements on staffing. Woodward had famously signed Kelly to a massive 10-year contract worth $95 million when he was hired from Notre Dame.
Governor Jeff Landry expressed his concerns over Woodward’s management, especially regarding the hefty contract given to Kelly, which included a staggering buyout clause that could reach $53 million. Landry stated, “I was not happy with the fact that we were raising ticket prices while having a losing season.” His focus is on the financial implications for taxpayers.
Interestingly, Woodward himself faces a buyout of over $6 million unless a settlement is reached. This payout would extend through 2029 and could be reduced if he finds another job in sports management.
Woodward, who took the helm at LSU in 2019, has a notable track record of hiring big-name coaches. While the Kelly hire didn’t pan out, he also brought Kim Mulkey on board for the women’s basketball team, leading them to a national championship in 2023.
In a letter to fans, Woodward expressed gratitude for his time at LSU. He reflected on the joy LSU Athletics brings to the community and the relationships he built during his tenure. Prior to becoming athletic director, Woodward had a background in political consulting and worked closely under NCAA president Mark Emmert.
